DIY or Die is the 1st episode of Season 2 in the 2016 reboot version of MacGyver.
Synopsis[]
Using a cell phone and soccer ball, MacGyver and the team search for a Navy SEAL who is believed to be alive in captivity in the Middle East.
Plot[]
Bozer has recently been released from the hospital due to his injuries from last season and Mac and Jack have recently returned after trying to find both Murdoc and Mac's father, to no avail. Mac does find his father's old watch, though. CIA agent Samantha Cage requests the Phoenix Foundation's help in an off-the-books mission to recover a SEAL officer who's been kidnapped for the past two years. They rescue the officer but, because of her policy violations, Cage is dishonorably discharged from the CIA. Matty hires Cage for the Phoenix Foundation. After their mission, Mac finds a photo of himself in his father's watch, taken the day his father left.
In Syria, 3 men are playing cards. Someone comes in, beats them and demands information. She is unable to get any information before they die.
In Cuba, Macgyver and Dalton are being interrogated. Dalton breaks free by beating the interrogator and both escape via a stolen vehicle.
Bozer and Riley leave a building, teasing Bozer while he sits on a wheelchair. Dalton, Mac, and Riley are in a car when Maddy calls them to return. Maddy had recruited the woman earlier; her name is Samantha Cage, a former special forces from Australia. There were told that the objective is a captured Navy Seal that was held captive for 2 years in Iraq; and that Cage was brought in to help. They had to volunteer as no one was wiling to make it an official operation.
On the airplane, they talk and get to know each other. Outside Istanbul, a guy in a truck carrying a goat stops at a security check and the 2 guards check and pass the back. 3 were actually hiding in the back. They needed to get past it, and stop at an abandoned town. Macgyver manages to fix up an abandoned car. A group of soldiers come and point weapons but Cage tell them to go elsewhere.
At Phoenix headquarters, Maddy says they are in the building. Macgyver uses a pole to get on the building, and opens the door so the 3 can enter. Searching the place, they find multiple people sitting in at a room; they have died. Mac sees scratch marks on the ground, and finds a door behind a shelf. It was clearly a room for a captive, but it has no one there. Cage sees a number as the code name of the person she wants to save.
Diaz is alive and has to be recused, as determined by Pheonix. Riley had traced some cell phones that used a recent wifi network. They go to somewhere else, and see kids playing football. They get the ball, put a drone in the ball, and kick it up into a building so someone catches it and removes it. Riley had used the short footage to find the hostage, who is still alive. A translation says that the captors plan on killing him in 2 hours. Riley beings hacking to find and help. They use a satellite to find radar, that way they can enter.
A plan is used and they decide to use the catacombs while a distraction up top is used. As Macgyver jumps into the tunnels, Cage and Dalton cause a riot. Macgyver blows a hole in the floor and brings Diaz to him and they escape. y quiet. Water was taken in and not treated properly.
Dalton walks into a room, and it turns out Bozer had already took captive the target.
In the end, at Pheonix headquarters, Maddie briefs the trio about the aftermath; mac and Dalton are given warnings and Cage is officially discharged from the CIA. At the same time, she is offered a job at the CIA. Maddie takes her to the interrogation room for potential intelligence. In the end, Jack has pulled a prank by reprogramming Boser's robot with his voice.

- Murdoc, Mac's Dad and Elwood Davis were all mentioned, but did not appear.
- This episode takes place in Syria, Cuba, California, Egypt and Istanbul, Turkey. While Barcelona, Spain, Kiev, Ukraine, Patagonia, South America and Cairo were all mentioned.
- Angus MacGyver and Jack Dalton tracked Mac's Dad his last known location to a hostel in Barcelona, Spain, then to a crash-pad in Kiev, Ukraine, which led to a cabin in Patagonia, South America before Matilda Webber called them back to The Phoenix Foundation.
- Samantha Cage is a former Special Air Service Regiment, (SAS) 4 Squadron, special forces unit of the Australian Army, later becoming a CIA agent.
- This season has a new opening from Season 1.

Samantha Cage: Did you just man-splain to him?
Jack Dalton: It's no man-splaining if it's man-to-man. It's just splaining.
Samantha Cage: I played soccer from the time I was 4, all the way through college!
Jack Dalton: Yeah, yeah. And I was the kicker for my middle school team.
Wilt Bozer: Yeah, it'll take more than a knife-wielding psychopath to stop me. I mean, not much more, but...
Matilda Webber: Oversight has informed me that I need to officially need to warn you both about your role in this mission.
Angus MacGyver: ...Wai- An official warning, that's it?!
Angus MacGyver: (Looks over at Jack)
Angus MacGyver: That's it?!
Jack Dalton: I got so many warnings on my official record, I've lost count.
Angus MacGyver: Oh yeah!
Matilda Webber: It'll go on your permanent file!
Jack Dalton: So what?!

- Egypt is located in Africa, while Turkey and Syria are part of Asia but all are part of The Middle East.
- The Middle East is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia and Egypt in North Africa.
- Isabel Lucas joins the teams and is credited as a series regular.
- Lucas Till revealed an in interview all voice over work was done on Sundays. So for Season 2 he asked to explain his steps on-camera so he could have a day off from work.
