Desiree "Desi" Nguyen is a new recruit for The Phoenix Foundation that was introduced in K-9 + Smugglers + New Recruit. She takes over Jack's role as an Overwatch for MacGyver. She also serves as his love interest. She was introduced as a recurring character in Season 3 and was promoted to a main character in Season 4.
Early life[]
Desi is one of the first women to graduate from U.S. Army Ranger School. While in the Army, she was assigned to a special ops team consisting of forces from the SAS, Delta Force and the CIA.[2]
Desi met Jack Dalton when he plucked her out of Ranger School to work on a special op. At first, she was disappointed because Jack only choose her since the mission required a linguist who spoke Vietnamese. Jack was able to win Desi over by treating her with a high level of respect even though she was a rookie. Desi and Jack developed a strong friendship and Desi felt indebted to him.[3]
While on active duty, Desi met a man named Evan and started a romantic relationship with him. The pair worked together and they both thrived on adrenaline rushes. Eventually, Desi and Evan were engaged but Evan was killed in enemy territory, and his body was never recovered. Desi was traumatized by Evan's death and was not able to find closure since she never learned what caused his death. Desi’s army comrades started to pity her which caused Desi to retire from military service.[3]
After she was discharged from the military, she used the G.I. Bill to go to the University of Michigan.[2]

She joins The Phoenix Foundation and helps the team rescue a K-9 dog from a group of smugglers and met Angus MacGyver. Before being officially introduced to the team at the Phoenix by Matty, she approached Mac, Boser, Leanna, and Riley and stuck "BANG" stickers on their foreheads. This was because they were not following proper counter surveillance procedures, like Matty does, and was supposed to be a reminder that anyone could get to them at any time if they were not careful. She also gave Riley a thumb drive containing her file, knowing that Riley would be looking for information on her later anyway.

Following the shutdown of The Phoenix Foundation. Desi had a brief but passionate relationship with her Overwatch Angus MacGyver but they broke up earlier to the start of the season. By the time she was found by her ex and newcomer Russ Taylor, she was blacklisted and became a bouncer at a bar until she accepted to help hunting down the Hades X1.

- Desi has expressed a dislike for guns like MacGyver, preferring to capture enemies instead of killing them. She carries a gun due to regulations and believes that it is sometimes necessary to use it. Desi admitted that she is more prone to using her gun on people who hurt animals.[2]
- She is the sixth love interest for the 2016-2021 incarnation of MacGyver, and the most frequently appearing of all others.
- Desi is an airplane pilot.[4]
- Desi has been a competitive soccer player since she was a child. [5] When she was young she was angry after missing a championship goal and kicked a dent in her father’s car.[1] She was a starting player at the University of Michigan during her senior year and during the finals, she scored goals and was named MVP.[5]
- Desi did not wear her retainer after her braces were removed which caused her to need braces again when she was in college.[4]
- She took ballet lessons as a child but did not enjoy them.[6]
