Ian Cain is a veteran CIA agent who was a hero during the Cold War. He took a young Matty Webber under his wing and became her mentor.

Early Life[]

Cain was a legend during the Cold War. He holds the record for getting defectors across the Berlin Wall and single-handedly stopped a Russian military coup against Gorbachev which, saved the peace process. When the Soviet Union began to collapse Cain was responsible for retrieving all of the dangerous weapons they had commissioned and feeling them in secured CIA facilities. One of the weapons that Cain was sent to apprehend was an incomplete directed Sonic based energy weapon known as Operation Harpy. Cain retrieved Harpy successfully and he stored it in the basement of the field office. When Matty Webber’s first mission went sideways Cain mounted a rescue using a stolen Canadian helicopter. He would go on to partner with Matty on many of her early missions and the two established a strong bond with each other. Matty claims that Ian helped her get over a broken heart implying that he was there for her after her husband Ethan Reigns disappeared. As Cain began to grow older he decided to take a low-key post in the CIA's field office in Slovenia. Even though he was taking a step away from the action, his position allowed him to continue to mentor young agents.

Season Five[]

Cain noticed that his staff were exhibiting unusual symptoms and he eventually sent out a distress system to Matty Webber. A Phoenix team arrived in Slovenia and found a barely conscious Cain in a secret bunker office. They transported him to the hospital so he could receive medical attention. His condition continued to deteriorate and he suffered from a stroke caused by exposure to a sonic based directed energy weapon. Later after receiving treatment Cain was able to offer information about Operation Harpy and worked with his contact in local law enforcement to stop the fresh from the Fatherland terrorist organization. After Harpy was destroyed Cain and that he had a heart-to-heart where he revealed that he would never retire because he enjoyed mentoring younger agents.
